Brisbane's Beaches: Where to Go for Your Next Adventure

Craving some sun, sand, and surf? Brisbane might not be the first city that springs to mind for beach adventures, but trust me - this subtropical paradise has some absolute gems up its sleeve. Whether you're a local looking for your next weekend escape or a visitor ready to explore, Brisbane's beaches offer everything from calm, family-friendly waters to surf-ready waves that'll get your heart racing.

Why Visit the Beaches in Brisbane?

Unlike its coastal cousins Sydney and Gold Coast, Brisbane's beach scene has a different flavour - one that's refreshingly laid-back and wonderfully uncrowded. Here, you'll find a mix of bayside gems and island paradises that offer the perfect escape from the city hustle.

The city's subtropical climate means you can enjoy these coastal treasures almost year-round, with water temperatures staying pleasantly warm even during winter months. Plus, many of Brisbane's beaches come with the added bonus of fantastic facilities - think beachfront pools, waterfront dining, and plenty of shaded areas for those scorching summer days.

What Are the Best Family-Friendly Beaches Around Brisbane?

When it comes to family beach days, Brisbane truly shines with its selection of kid-friendly coastal spots. From protected swimming areas to beachside playgrounds, these destinations make beach outings with the little ones a breeze. Here are some of our favourites:

Wynnum Manly

Just 35 minutes from The Hotel Grand Chancellor, Wynnum Manly is the perfect family-friendly escape. The star attraction here isn't just the beach - it's the fantastic Wynnum Wading Pool, a free water park that's a hit with the littlies. Pack a picnic and spend the day exploring the lengthy esplanade, where you'll find plenty of shaded spots and playgrounds.

The local coffee shops and ice cream parlours add that extra touch of holiday magic, while the monthly markets bring an extra buzz to the foreshore.

Redcliffe Jetty

Redcliffe might be Brisbane's worst-kept secret, but there's a good reason for that. This seaside gem, about 40 minutes from the city, combines beautiful beaches with proper holiday vibes. The historic jetty provides the perfect backdrop for your family photos, while the Settlement Cove Lagoon offers safe swimming for the whole family.

What really sets Redcliffe apart is its amazing food scene - from fresh seafood to bustling weekend markets, you'll find plenty to keep your taste buds happy.

Sandgate & Shorncliffe

Sandgate and Shorncliffe beaches, both just 30 minutes from The Hotel Grand Chancellor, offer calm waters perfect for paddle boarding and kayaking. The connected seaside villages give you that proper beachside community feel, complete with fish and chip shops that'll transport you straight back to your childhood.

The renovated Shorncliffe Pier is a favourite spot for sunset strolls, while the surrounding parks provide excellent BBQ facilities for the perfect family day out.

Where Can Couples Find Romantic Beaches Near Brisbane?

Looking for something a bit more intimate? South Bank’s very own Streets Beach might be man-made, but there's something undeniably romantic about swimming with the city skyline as your backdrop.

Just a 30-minute walk from The Hotel Grand Chancellor, it's perfect for those evenings when you want to combine a beach visit with a city dining experience. The South Bank parklands come alive at night with twinkling lights reflecting off the water, creating an almost magical atmosphere for a twilight swim or riverside dinner.

For couples seeking a more natural setting, the southern end of Bribie Island offers secluded spots perfect for romantic beach walks. Pack a picnic and head to Red Beach for a sunset experience that'll have you feeling worlds away from the city, despite being just an hour's drive from your hotel.

Which Brisbane Beaches Are Perfect for a Day Trip?

If you’re looking to venture a bit further afield, Brisbane's surrounding islands and coastal areas offer perfect day trip destinations. These spots might require a bit more planning, but the reward is access to some of Queensland's most stunning beaches. Here are some of the best day trips in our opinion:

Moreton Island

Coastline with boats

You can’t miss Moreton Island’s famous Tangalooma Wrecks.

Moreton Island is your ticket to paradise, and it's only a 75-minute ferry ride from Brisbane. The Tangalooma Wrecks are an absolute must-see - imagine snorkelling around shipwrecks in crystal-clear waters.

The ferry departs from Holt Street Wharf, just 15 minutes from The Grand Chancellor, making it perfect for a day trip adventure. While you're there, try your hand at sandboarding down the massive dunes, or join a dolphin feeding session at sunset.

The island's western beaches offer calm waters perfect for swimming, while the eastern side provides more adventurous visitors with excellent surfing opportunities.

North Stradbroke Island

'Straddie', as the locals call it, is a world unto itself. Catch the ferry from Cleveland (45 minutes from Brisbane) and you'll be rewarded with some of Queensland's most spectacular beaches.

Point Lookout is your go-to spot for whale watching between June and November. The North Gorge Walk offers breathtaking coastal views and the chance to spot turtles, dolphins, and manta rays in the crystal-clear waters below.

Bribie Island

As mentioned earlier, Bribie Island offers another fantastic day trip option, just over an hour's drive north. The western side gives you calm waters perfect for families, while the eastern beaches satisfy your surf cravings.

Meanwhile, Caloundra, the gateway to the Sunshine Coast, is worth the 90-minute drive for its string of gorgeous beaches and coastal walks.

How Far Are Brisbane's Beaches from the City?

Getting to Brisbane's beaches is a breeze from the CBD. Regular trains run to most bayside suburbs, while ferries to the islands depart throughout the day. If you're driving, you'll find most mainland beaches within a 40-minute radius of the city, with plenty of parking available. The public transport system is particularly convenient - grab yourself a Go Card for your nearest 7-Eleven or tap and go from almost any station and you're set for unlimited beach-hopping adventures.

For island destinations, plan your journey around the ferry timetables. Early morning departures often mean fewer crowds and more time to explore. Many tour operators also offer shuttle services from major hotels, including the Grand Chancellor, making island day trips even more accessible.

Planning Your Beach Day Out

Sun safety is key on Brissy’s beaches!

Planning makes perfect when it comes to beach days in Brisbane. Our subtropical climate and unique coastal geography mean that a little preparation goes a long way toward ensuring your beach adventure runs smoothly.

Your Packing List

Here's the thing about Brisbane - sun protection is non-negotiable (we're talking SPF 50+, hat, and sunnies), and don't forget insect repellent for those dawn and dusk visits. Pack plenty of water - our summer humidity can sneak up on you - and consider bringing some cash for those beachside markets and coffee stops.

If you're heading to one of the islands, pack light but smart. A change of clothes, waterproof phone case, and some basic snorkelling gear will set you up for a perfect day out. Most beaches have excellent facilities, but it's worth throwing in a beach umbrella for extra shade during summer months.
