DARK MOFO 2025
Dark MOFO is the annual Winter festival hosted by the team at MONA (the Museum of Old and New Art).
This festival celebrates traditional winter solstice rituals and raises questions on ancient and contemporary mythology, humans and nature, religious and secular traditions, birth, death, and renewal.
It's important to keep an open mind when it comes to Dark MOFO - there is lots to see, do, and absorb, and it can be quite confronting, thought-provoking, exhilarating, underwhelming, overwhelming, or just a bit weird!
There's something for everyone in the three-week program of events (with plenty of free stuff as well). If you're thinking about checking it, here are a few of our tips:
• WINTER FEAST - Grab a spot by the fire and some delicious warm food to share, maybe even a mulled wine or a boozy hot chocolate. You can choose to pay for a single night’s entry, or you can get a season pass and attend as many times as you want during the festival. It’s worth getting a season pass - you’ll want to keep going back for more!
• GIVE IT A GO - The descriptions for different events in the program are quite vague - it is part of the fun to put your faith in what the festival creators have produced and give it a go! You never know what you’ll come across.
• FAMILY FRIENDLY - Despite the dark and seemingly debaucherous nature of Dark Mofo, it does have a family-friendly side as well. The streets along Salamanca’s waterfront are lit up with bright lights, some installations that are suitable for people of all ages (some parental guidance may be required here) and the Winter Feast is the perfect place to rug up around crackling fires and eat delicious local food with the whole family.
Never been to Dark Mofo? Definitely a reason to visit Hobart next June.
